8 May 1982, 1:52 pm. Forty years ago, racing lost one of its greatest stars. The talent of Gilles Villeneuve can best be compared to a rough diamond: high-carat and uncut. Tazio 3 looks back at Villeneuve's last day at Zolder. The cover story was triggered by Dutch photographer Willem J. Staat's photo of Gilles looking directly into the lens before setting off on the final laps of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. "When he looked into my lens, I could see the fire, the anger in his eyes." The authors spoke to the people who were at Zolder then and asked them how they experienced the events on 8 May 1982. Apart from Willem Staat, there are Ferrari's technical director at the time, Mauro Forghieri, Roland Bruynseraede, who was not yet Formula One race director but was assisting the race director in Belgium that day, and Giulio Giulietti, a marshal in the paddock whom a Ferrari engineer grabbed by the shoulders when the engines suddenly fell silent. Finally, there is Dirk De Weert, a Belgian journalist who was preparing for his first live commentary of a Formula One race and was shocked by what he saw on his TV screen. And we hear from Jochen Mass, the man who finally turned his back on Formula 1 that year because the price was too high.
The magazine with the name of the "Flying Mantovan", who among other things made the Silver Arrows look old at the Nürburgring in 1935 in an Alfa Romeo, is published by Johan Dillen and Dirk de Jager. The finely designed magazine is dedicated to the most exciting and important moments in motorsport history. Among them is a test drive in a Brabham BT3.
