Sunshine, Speed And A Surprise
Joel Finn's complete story of the first Grand Prix of the United States and supporting races held at Sebring, Florida in 1959. This is a story of speed, challenge and champions. In the decade after WWll, in an America gone patriotic and car crazy, racing promoter Alec Ulmann created an unlikely sports car race circuit on an airfield near Sebring, a sleepy town in central Florida. However it was after years of negotiation and effort that Ulmann scored motor racing's biggest prize: his circuit in Sebring would host the first Formula 1 Grand Prix race to be staged in America. Better still, it would be at the end of the racing season when 1959 FIA World Drivers Championship would be decided in what turned out to be a surprising finish.
