Porsche 911 Targa

The 911 Targa combines many things in a very special way: the joy of open-top driving, a rigid body and increased safety despite the lack of a roof, and last but not least, a clear design statement.

Like many successful things, the Targa was initially a kind of stopgap solution: In order to build a convertible in the early 1960s, the body of the 911 had to be stiffened, which initially proved difficult. In addition, there was a threat of a ban on completely open cars in the USA. The Porsche developers solved both problems by adding a roll bar, while the designers gave it an elegant finish in brushed stainless steel. The Targa concept underwent various evolutions over the decades: the initially foldable rear window became fixed, the bar was later also available in black, over several generations the bar was completely omitted and became a large glass roof, while it finally celebrated its acclaimed return in the 991 model series. Yesterday as today, the circle of enthusiasts is devoted and convinced that they are driving the best and most beautiful of all 911s.

With unrivalled everyday practicality, high driving dynamics and that strikingly designed ‘Targa bar’, this body style quickly won many fans and has been part of the range in all 911 generations to date. This book brings together all generations of the 911 Targa, which was launched in 1965, in stunning pictures, while developers and designers explain the background to the ‘safety convertible’ and its significance for the Porsche brand.
