In order to open up new markets in the post-war period, for example in Africa and South America, from the 1950s Mercedes-Benz used endurance events on transcontinental routes several thousand kilometres long to successfully demonstrate the durability and endurance of new vehicle models in front of an international audience.

Gradually, these teams, initially supported by local factory representatives, became official factory teams, which drove to impressive victories with meticulously planned and elaborate logistics and with outstanding drivers. The new work by Peter Schroeder, renowned motorsport author and former racing doctor, sheds light on this rather little-known era of Mercedes history.
