Helmut Kalenborn: Der Bergkönig von Mallorca
You don’t have to be one of the superstars of motorsport to experience an exciting, successful and extraordinary career on four fast wheels. This book tells the story of Helmut Kalenborn. The sporting triumph of the Straßfeld native, born on 2 April 1940, began in the early seventies.
The car mechanic took part in national and international circuit and mountain races in Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Czechoslovakia. Kalenborn achieved his international breakthrough with an NSU-Brixner racing car at the ADAC 500 km Eifel Cup race on 3 September 1972.
Until 1975, he competed in numerous races at the Nürburgring, Hockenheim and the airfield circuits in Mainz-Finthen and Diepholz. When he also competed in Formula Super-V races from the mid-seventies, his opponents included the later Formula 1 world champion Keke Rosberg.
In 1980 and 1981 he took part in the Formula 2 European Championship with Chevron B42-BMW and March 752-BMW M12. On holiday in Mallorca, he got to know the Balearic Mountain Championship, drove the season for the first time in 1983 and won the championship right away. In 1996 and 1997 he was Balearic Sportsman of the Year, and in 2002 he became mountain champion for the ninth time. Since 2014, a commemorative plaque erected by the Balearic Motorsport Association has commemorated the sporting successes of the German, who currently lives in retirement on Mallorca.
