Games Without Frontiers Volume 1 1966-1974
What do the introduction of colour television, the fate of truck manufacturer Berliet, the competition between Simca, Citroën and Renault, illegal party funding in France and films by Jean-Luc Godard have to do with motor sport under the tricolour? All kinds of, says author Stuart Ager. He has dealt intensively with the fascinating question of what actually lay behind the zealous French involvement in motor sport in the Sixties and after. Put into a very simple formula: President Charles de Gaulle as it were had given the order that the titles of Le Mans, the Monte Carlo Rally and the Formula 1 World Championship belonged in French hands. For what is the old saying of those with a history in this field: "Win on Sunday, sell in Monday". De Gaulle simply wanted to help the domestic car industry get going – by almost any means. A weird topic, no less weirdly illustrated with a series of drawings and caricatures as well as photos and collages. What does the British magazine "Motorsport" write? “Within bite-sized chapters that never fail to enthral, we are led through the political drama behind the scenes as France strove to lead the world through tech innovation, while, of course, also hoping to give the British a good sock on the jaw.”
